Our English Language School in Brighton
Loxdale, an English language school in Brighton, is made up of three buildings, only seconds away from each other, on the same site. If you are looking for high quality, affordable English lessons then look no further.
Since it was founded in 1968, Loxdale English Centre has run high quality English courses for thousands of students. Most of our language teachers have many years’ experience in the teaching of English as a foreign language. As a further guarantee of quality, our School is accredited by the British Council for teaching English in the UK and is a member of English UK, Young Learners English UK and Sussex Safeguarding.
We have such a wonderful, large site that we can offer courses for both adults and children without them disturbing each other.
We welcome international adult students to Loxdale all year round. We accept young learners in January and early February (12 to 17 year olds) and the summer period (8 to 17 year olds). In addition to that, we also accept young learners in closed courses at any time out of the summer period.

Loxdale is not like most other language schools. Out of the summer, we offer you chances to individualise your learning and course and to learn more than just English language. Our courses are based on active student participation and designed to reinforce your learning experience and appreciation of the English language and British culture and life.
Our lively and interactive programmes are designed for students who wish to improve their ability to communicate in English in the company of like-minded people from around the world, whilst also enjoying the experience of learning in Brighton, one of the UK’s most vibrant, open-minded and culturally diverse cities.
Out of the summer period, adults are allocated a personal tutor who will be there to support and guide you throughout your studies and all students have access to our caring Welfare and Accommodation Officer.
For professional, stand-alone English lessons conducted in a warm and friendly atmosphere then our highly popular General English course is the perfect answer to your needs.
If you want to push yourself even more academically and make the most of your time in the UK, why not choose one of our more intensive courses; English Plus, Intensive English or Super Intensive English course?
Study English with other subjects to make the most of your time in England. The English Plus course is an opportunity of combining General English with a diverse range of subjects with something to suit most tastes. Courses include: art, gardening, fashion, drama, history, screen-printing, photography, geography, digital media, British culture and creative English.
The Intensive English course adds an extra 5 tuition sessions to your week whilst on the Super Intensive English course, you will study a total of 30 lessons each week.
Whilst always trying to maintain the highest academic standards, Loxdale English language courses are competitively priced and represent excellent value for money. As an educational charity, we exist to provide the opportunity for students to come and study English in the UK so try to keep our prices as reasonable as possible.
It is not just our high academic standards and fantastic year round school site that set us apart. You don’t stop learning when you leave the classroom at Loxdale; you have a range of opportunities for self-study, extra work and a fun and varied social programme. We are committed to providing a stimulating learning environment that will empower students of all ages and social backgrounds to reach their full potential.
We actively encourage critical study while nurturing tolerance and respect for all people, cultures and ideas. Students get many opportunities of influencing different components of the course – from social activities to the syllabus.
Loxdale really does offer you “more than just English”. So why not come and join us for an unforgettable experience?
Young Learner Courses
Loxdale English Centre is made up of three buildings, only seconds away from each other, on the same site. They are surrounded by our large garden and trees. The Main building is housed in a beautiful, traditional English Victorian mansion and is mostly used for our adult courses. One of the other buildings is mostly used for our Young Learner courses. The third building hosts our sports hall, common rooms, music room, table tennis room and lecture room. These can also be used as classrooms.
We have superior on-site facilities including 16 classrooms, a library, a self-study room with timetabled teacher led sessions, free wi-fi, computer room, a dining room providing hot food, snacks and drinks, a sports hall, table tennis room, music room (with guitars, piano, keyboard, percussion instruments including drum set), lecture room and large gardens. There is also a student social room that is open each day and most evenings where students can relax, socialise, play sports, watch films, play on the Wii or Play Station 3, study and cook.
In 1979, Loxdale moved to Portslade which is a residential suburb of Brighton & Hove. This area has a population of 18,000 and is made up of Portslade-by-Sea and Portslade Old Village, each with their own character. Our School is just a 20 to 25-minute direct bus journey from the centre of Brighton or you can get the train.
All of our host families are regularly visited and are on regular bus routes and within a 25 minute walk of the School.
Portslade Village has a post office, small shop, cafes, garden centre, charity shop, take away restaurants and pubs. It nestles in the valley of the Sussex Downs and still retains its flint buildings, village green and small parish church (the 2nd oldest church in the city). Portslade-by-Sea is a small but busy seaport harbour basin. It has a main shopping area and Portslade train station. The direct train takes you to the centre of London in an hour.
Brighton & Hove really does have it all! There is always something to do or see in our vibrant and exciting city. It is full of culture, music, dining and fun. The first mention of Brighton was in 1086 but the fishing village only became fashionable during the 1780s when the Prince Regent became a regular visitor. Brighton & Hove now has a population of over 250,000. It has great transport links and is in easy reach of many interesting towns and attractions to explore. We have the sea to the south and the Sussex Downs (National Park) to the north, so Brighton & Hove is a long, thin city and it means you will find it easy to explore the different parts.
With the seaside, countryside and city, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Brighton & Hove.
Swedish Folk High School
Loxdale English Centre, Brighton, is also a Swedish Folk High School. Folk High Schools are an adult educational charity primarily in Scandinavia. This means that adult students from Sweden are eligible to have their course fees financed through a government grant, effectively making the course free.
For further information in Swedish about grants or funding for accommodation and food please look at the Braheskolan website at www.braheskolan.se under the CSN tab.
